How to compare bathroom remodeling estimates
Two estimates can describe a bathroom remodel and still cover very different work. Before comparing the totals, make sure you understand what each contractor has included—and what decisions are still open.

Start with the same scope
Write down what you want to keep, replace or relocate. Keeping the vanity, toilet and shower in their existing locations is a different scope from changing the room layout. An estimate for replacing finishes is also different from one that includes opening walls, changing lighting or improving ventilation.
Ask each contractor to describe demolition, installation and finishing work clearly. A line that says “bathroom remodel” leaves too much room for different assumptions.
Separate selections from allowances
An allowance is an amount included for an item that has not been fully selected. Ask which products are specified and which still carry allowances. For a vanity, for example, clarify whether the amount covers the cabinet alone or also includes the countertop, sink, faucet and installation.
Review tile, fixtures, shower glass, mirrors, lighting and hardware in the same way. Record who supplies each item and how a selection above or below the allowance affects the final price. A lower allowance can make one proposal look less expensive without describing the bathroom you actually want.
Ask about the work behind the finishes
Good-looking tile is only one part of a bathroom. Ask the contractor to explain the proposed waterproofing, ventilation and preparation work, and which qualified trades will handle the relevant work. You do not need to become a technical expert; you do need to understand what is included and who is accountable for coordinating it.
Make exclusions visible
Ask what the estimate does not cover. Discuss demolition debris, protection of adjoining rooms, patching and painting, delivery charges and final cleanup. Clarify whether permit-related work or fees are included, where applicable, and who will confirm the requirements for your particular property and scope.
Existing conditions may only become clear after work begins. Ask how discoveries will be documented, priced and approved before additional work proceeds. Treat an unexplained exclusion as a question to resolve, rather than assuming every contractor has included it.
Understand the schedule and communication
Distinguish a target start date from a confirmed schedule. Ask which selections need to be finalized first, what materials need to arrive and how the team will communicate changes. If this is your only bathroom, discuss how daily access will be affected before choosing a construction sequence.
